The Wonders of Irish Seaweed on The Wild Atlantic Way

These were taken on the beaches at at Easky and Enniscrone, Co Mayo in 2024.

Ireland has 7,000 kilometres of coastline fed by the temperate waters of the Gulf Stream so it’s not surprising it has an abundance of seaweed or feamainn as it is known in Irish.

There are a staggering 501 (approx) species of seaweed occuring in Ireland. One of the most distinctive is Riseach or as it is known in English, Sea Spaghetti. This once air-dried and then soaked in water can be used in salads.

Other seaweeds are used as a health treatment (Thalassotherapy) in seaweed baths which can be found all along the route of The Wild Atlantic Way.
